The astrophysical Muppet show: Watching the birth of a new (astro)physical window in real time

The IceCube Collaboration has reported evidence for high energy extraterrestrial neutrinos in the tens of TeV to PeV energy range. First, I will recap the main features of the detected signal and emphasize the peculiarity of the PeV energy neutrino window. Then, I will show how these observations provide an additional, serendipitous opportunity for constraining (and searching for) new physics, notably Dark Matter, but also more speculative extensions of the standard model.
