Description
Electron Cyclotron Resonance Source Ion (ECRIS) are used to produce ion beams for accelerators and industrial applications. The temporal stability of the current beam is an important parameter. ECRIS plasmas have been demonstrated to exhibit kinetic plasma instabilities, which restrict the parameter space for the optimization of the ion beam currents. The main goal of the work is to refine the understanding of the physical mechanisms of the relationship between the ECRIS and the transition from stable to unstable operation. In this seminar, a study on the relationship between kinetic instability and magnetic field parameters is presented based on the experiments done in Phoenix charge breeder and an ion source at JYFL accelerator laboratory.
