Abstract:
The estimation of the biological damage produced by neutrons is not an easy problem to solve. As neutrons ionize indirectly, the key point for the biological study is the effect of the secondary particles after the collisions and nuclear reactions produced by them in the tissue, which depend on the neutron energy. The knowledge of biological damage of neutrons is useful for radioprotection, but also a key factor for therapies with neutrons like Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT).

BNCT is an experimental form of selective radiotherapy which is currently regaining interest because of the most recent promising clinical trials, and the development of new in-hospital accelerator-based neutron sources that may bring this therapy closer to the clinical practice. BNCT uses the external irradiation with neutrons in conjunction with a selective tumor preload of a compound with the isotope 10B.

In this work, in-vitro irradiations were performed at three different facilities with the objective of obtaining radiobiological data in various conditions. Different cell lines were irradiated with low energetic neutrons at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL,France) reactor, with high energetic neutrons at the Centro Nacional de Aceleradores (CNA,Spain) and with a gamma beam at the hospital Linac of Hospital Virgen de las Nieves (Spain). All these data joined with a revision of the current formalism to estimate the BNCT dose effect can help to a better estimation of the damage in BNCT patients.
