Description
/SuperB/ is a “2^nd -generation” /B/-Factory proposed to be built near the LNF Frascati in Italy, with a planned luminosity of 1036 /cm2 /s; about 2 orders of magnitude above the luminosity of the present-day /B/-Factories PEP-II and KEKB. Its distinguishing feature is a relatively large crossing angle and the use of a “crab waist” to reduce the beam-beam issues associated with the crossing angle, which was recently tested successfully at DAFNE. The high luminosity is achieved with very small beam emittance and very small ß functions at the interaction point, while the beam current in both rings is comparable to that of the present-day machines. Polarization of the electron beam is part of the proposal. The machine is currently being designed by an international collaboration spearheaded by LNF Frascati and SLAC. In this talk I will outline the machine design and parameters and discuss the special challenges posed by the small beam emittance and by the polarization capability.
