I will discuss certain scenarios concerning the acceleration of the universe and their compatibility with local tests of gravity. In particular, I shall concentrate on chameleon models and explain how the thin shell mechanism prevents the existence of a fifth force. I will then present laboratory tests of these models such the Casimir effect.
