Description
Recently the Daya Bay and RENO collaboration have published results confirming the discovery of a sizable reactor angle which clearly rules out the hypothesis of exact tri-bimaximal lepton mixing. This observation fundamentally challenges the idea of a simple underlying non-Abelian discrete family symmetry that governs the flavour structure of leptons and possibly also the quarks. Is there a way to reconcile a relatively large theta_13 with family symmetry models? In my talk I will discuss various model building strategies to implement a non-zero theta_13. I will argue why family symmetries, which have been tremendously popular over the last seven or so years, remain appealing despite the apparent demise of exact tri-bimaximal mixing.
