Dates : The workshop will start on Tuesday, May 20, at 14:00 and will end on Thursday, May 22, at noon

Place : The workshop will take place at Institute Laue Langevin

          Polygone Scientifique - BP 156 - 6, rue Jules Horowitz - 38042 Grenoble Cedex 9

The aim of the workshop is to have a focused discussion on how a gas filled magnetic spectrometer can be of use in the experimental study of the nuclear fission process and on fission product spectroscopy. The topic is of relevance for the FIPPS-project in Grenoble which will combine a gas filled magnetic device to a high efficiency Germanium array. In the first instant this spectrometer will be placed at a thermal neutron beam at the Institut Laue-Langevin. Further use of the spectrometer on a fast neutron beam or a charged particle beam is envisaged. This workshop will also be an opportunity to discuss about computing projects of other facilities for fission study and fission product spectroscopy (LANSCE, IRMM, GSI, GANIL, Manchester ..) and recent theoretical developments.
In the workshop in particular the following items should be addressed:
  • Coupling of a gas filled magnetic device to a Ge-γ array to determine fission yield as function of mass and nuclear charge of the fission products
  • Kinetic energy distributions as function of (A,Z)
  • Prompt γ and neutron decay as function of (A,Z) of the fission product: entry states in nuclear fission as a function of excitation energy and spin distributions in fission fragments
  • Nuclear structure of neutron rich fission products by prompt γ spectroscopy using the gas filled device as a filter
  • Lifetimes of excited states in fission products
  • Study of β delayed γ decay in the focal plane of the gas filled device
In addition to the scientific questions a considerable time of the workshop will be devoted to the experimental set-up :
  • The working principles of gas filled spectrometer for fission products : energy loss and bending in gas filled magnetic devices, trajectory calculations with estimation of variances
  • Measurement of ion tracks via time projection chambers inside the magnetic field region
  • Determination of fission fragment kinetic energies using time pick-up devices and ionization chamber
Efficiencies, mass and charge resolving power for different magnet geometries
