Abstract:
For the High Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the entire inner tracking system of the ATLAS detector will be replaced by an all-silicon Inner Tracker called the ITk. The pixel detector will consist of five barrel layers and a number of rings, resulting in about 13 m^2 of instrumented area covering out to |η| < 4.
The pixel detector will be instrumented with new sensor and readout electronics technologies to improve the tracking performance and cope with the High Luminosity LHC environment, which will be severe in terms of occupancy and radiation. While the outer three layers of the Pixel Detector are designed to operate for the full HL-LHC data taking period, the innermost two layers of the detector, instrumented with the 3D pixel sensors and 100 μm thin planar sensors, will be replaced around half of the lifetime. Large scale prototyping programmes are being carried out by all subsystems. The overview of the ITk pixel detector and current status of the development of the ITk Pixel Detector will be given.
